Maavurundai (Lentil Flour Balls): A Traditional Sweet Snack

Description

Maavurundai is a classic South Indian sweet made with roasted moong dal flour, jaggery, and ghee. These fragrant and melt-in-your-mouth balls are a popular festive treat and a simple yet delicious snack.

Ingredients

For Maavurundai

  • 1 cup Moong Dal (Yellow Split Mung Beans)
  • 3/4 cup Jaggery (grated or powdered, adjust to taste)
  • 1/4 cup Ghee (Clarified Butter) (melted)
  • 1/2 teaspoon Cardamom Powder

Instructions

  1. Dry roast the moong dal in a heavy-bottomed pan over medium heat until it turns golden brown and aromatic. Be careful not to burn it.
  2. Let the roasted moong dal cool down completely.
  3. Grind the cooled moong dal into a fine powder in a blender or food processor. Sieve the flour to remove any coarse particles.
  4. In a large bowl, combine the sieved moong dal flour, grated jaggery, and cardamom powder. Mix well.
  5. Gradually add the melted ghee to the flour mixture while mixing with your hands. The mixture should come together like a crumble.
  6. Take small portions of the mixture and press them firmly in your palm to form small, smooth balls (laddus). If the mixture is too dry to bind, you can add a little more melted ghee, one teaspoon at a time.
  7. Arrange the Maavurundai on a plate and let them cool completely before storing.
