Maavurundai (Lentil Flour Balls): A Traditional Sweet Snack

Description
Maavurundai is a classic South Indian sweet made with roasted moong dal flour, jaggery, and ghee. These fragrant and melt-in-your-mouth balls are a popular festive treat and a simple yet delicious snack.
Ingredients
For Maavurundai
- 1 cup Moong Dal (Yellow Split Mung Beans)
- 3/4 cup Jaggery (grated or powdered, adjust to taste)
- 1/4 cup Ghee (Clarified Butter) (melted)
- 1/2 teaspoon Cardamom Powder
Instructions
- Dry roast the moong dal in a heavy-bottomed pan over medium heat until it turns golden brown and aromatic. Be careful not to burn it.
- Let the roasted moong dal cool down completely.
- Grind the cooled moong dal into a fine powder in a blender or food processor. Sieve the flour to remove any coarse particles.
- In a large bowl, combine the sieved moong dal flour, grated jaggery, and cardamom powder. Mix well.
- Gradually add the melted ghee to the flour mixture while mixing with your hands. The mixture should come together like a crumble.
- Take small portions of the mixture and press them firmly in your palm to form small, smooth balls (laddus). If the mixture is too dry to bind, you can add a little more melted ghee, one teaspoon at a time.
- Arrange the Maavurundai on a plate and let them cool completely before storing.
